Wedding Day Tunes

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Thought I would treat everyone to a few of my favorite songs from our wedding day.

We danced our first dance to “Waste” by Phish. It is really a wonderful song. If you are searching for a unique 1st dance song that no one is expecting try “Waste”. Our DJ said that it was the 1st time he has ever played Phish at a wedding. Ha! Yea….us!!!!

Back in Action?

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

The other day our friend Scott called Derek about helping shoot a wedding with him in June.  See, Derek and I used to be pretty big wedding photographers…ya’ know.  (as if you didn’t…HA!)  We shot a whole two weddings back in good-ole’ 2008.

I know, it’s pretty serious!

Together with our friend Scott, Derek & I started a quasi side business in the art of photography.  The name of the company was Derok Design Photography.  The first wedding Derek & I shot was our good friends Megan & Justin’s.  It was a georgeous wedding, very personalized and fun, but we realized about 1/2 way through that shooting weddings are not for everyone.  Our feet were about to fall off as the night came to an end, and we dicided that other than the wedding we had promised to shoot in the following two months…we were done with weddings.  It is a really tiring job. You have to be in six places at once, sometimes in the sweltering Memphis heat while lugging all the equipment you intend to use.  We realized weddings were not our calling.  Decent side money, but it wasn’t worth the pain.

I have really sensitive feet….waaahhhhhh!  Feel sympathy for me!  ;)

Our friend Scott loves it though, and he is still chugging along in the wedding photography business.  He split off from us quitters and decided to shoot under his own name, Scott Penny.  He does portraits, engagements, weddings, birthdays, graduations, you name it (within reason) he’ll shoot it.

Anyway, the reason for this flash back is that I may be helping Scott out as a second photographer for a wedding he is shooting this June.  We shall see if the ole’ girl gets back in the wedding action.  Here are some pictures of Megan & Justin’s wedding from October 2008.

Six & Counting

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Well, today is our 1st big milestone of marriage….6 months!  People keep asking “How is married life?”, as if they expected to hear the we are already separated and deciding on who gets which dog.  All I have to say is…it’s perfect.  Not a darn thing hard or trying about marriage.  The key is to pick Mr. Right, not Mr. Right-Now.  That is exactly what I did.  Derek cracks me up on a daily basis, takes care of me when I am sick or feeling down, and knows what buttons not to push.  Did I mention he is extremely handsome?  I mean just look at him!

We haven’t had it easy these 1st 6 months.  We have re-financed our house, the “when we will have kids” discussion, a sick dog, numerous car problems, Derek studying for the GMAT, and various animals living under & in our house.  You just gotta take it as it comes and lean on others when needed.  Anywho….these 1st 6 months have been magnificent, and I am looking to many, many more.

Love you, Derek!

A Different Kind of Guest Book

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Instead of the traditional wedding guest book Derek and I decided to do something a bit different to record the wishes and signatures of loved ones who attend our special day.  Since Derek and I are into graphic design we decided to design a poster that would act as the guest book for our wedding, but also an extension of some of our favorite things.  Since I designed our invites, I asked Derek if he would design a “guest” poster, advertising our big day, using aspects of old DMB concert posters and design aesthetics we love.

Now, I cannot not take all of the credit for this intresting take on the run of the mill guest book.  I was inspired by a graphic desiner named, Leslie Hamer, I found on Etsy….one of my favorite websites.  Etsy, is an online marketplace where people can buy and sell handmade goods.  It has everything from graphic design “services”, to thank you card, to quilts, to furniture.  If you like unique, vintage, non mass produced things that really make people stop and admire them than Etsy is the place for you.
